Year 6

In Year 6 we serve as role models for the rest of the school, therefore we aim to be helpful, hard-working and happy!

This Year will be jam packed full of trips, visits and adventures – including our city residential – as well as working towards our celebration of leaning (otherwise known as SATs).

They will also be preparing for a big transition to secondary school, learning to be more independent and mature in preparation for Year 7.

Please feel free to take a look through our pages and links to explore all of the fantastic things we get up to!

Year 6 Curriculum

Year 6 Curriculum

There are so many exciting learning opportunities for us this year in Year 6 and I know we are going to really enjoy the topics that are going to be covered.

In History, we will be delving into the topics of World War 2, The Windrush Generation and Monarchs through time, while in Geography we are going to be discovering about Mountains, Earthquakes and Natural Disasters, comparing where we live with places in Europe and North America and also looking at how and why people have settled in the places they have all over the world.

Our Science journey will continue studies in living things and their habitats and animal life cycles, animals including humans, the circulatory system and water transport, light, electricity and evolution and inheritance.

Widening our learning journey, we will further our understanding of online safety, coding and spreadsheets; and learn about binary, networks, quizzing and blogging in computing.  Our Art topics are drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D and children will also learn how to respond creatively. Among other things, we’ll be exploring eating ethically and on a budget, gears, designing structures, switches and circuits to link with our science topics and sustainable materials in DT.  In RE we will study Islam and Christianity and PSHE will also focus on an array of important topics set to both support the emotional well-being of our children and also prepare them for the wider world. Sport is on the menu in French and of course there is music and PE to get excited about too.

Best of all, there are SO many wonderful books for us to read, listen to and study this year some of which we will link to our writing, others that we will enjoy purely for pleasure…

It’s going to be a great year!

Homework

Homework

Each week homework is set on Monday and should be finished or handed in by the following Monday.

Homework will normally consist of:

Reading
Children should read AT LEAST 4 times during the week – even better to strive for 5, or read every single night.
Children are encouraged to write a comment in their Learning Logs to show their opinions on their reading, or to magpie good vocabulary and even to note down words that they didn’t understand so we can discuss them in class.

Reading Question.
Each week children are set a reading question. This encourages them to think more deeply about their reading and they should write their response in their Learning Logs.

Children who have read at least 4 times during the week AND answered their reading question, will be awarded a reading certificate and have their photo posted on Class Dojo School Story.

Spellings
A list of between 10 and 20 words to learn. These will be tested on the Monday after the spellings have been given.
The words for our spelling tests are taken from the Year 5/6 Statutory word list and can be accessed by the button below.

Children who score full marks in their spelling test will be awarded green bubbles.

Every term we will return to the Year 5/6 Statutory Spelling list to check progress against all of these spellings so it is always worth returning to this list to check previous spelling test words as the weeks go by to try and improve progress. By the end of Year 6, children should be able to spell around 85% of these words.

STATUTORY WORD LIST

Mathematics and English
Tables are tested every Monday using Times Tables Rockstars. Children are tested on all of the times tables in order to prepare them for their SATs. The tests are split into multiplication, division and a mixture of the two. The tests are out of 60 and will there is a time limit of 3 minutes for each test.
Children who score 60 will be awarded green bubbles. If improvements are made in the scores, green bubbles are also awarded.

It is VITAL that you know your tables and the division facts that go alongside these up to 12 x 12.

Children are also set x2 maths and x2 English tasks on SATs Companion each week.
These must be completed every week as part of their Y6 homework.
