Year 4 Homework and Home Learning
Each week homework is set on Monday and should be finished or handed in by Friday.
Homework will normally consist of:
• Children must read AT LEAST 4 times during the week, but should ‘strive for 5’, or read every single night.
Children are encouraged to write a comment in their Learning Logs to show their opinions on their reading, or to ‘magpie’ good vocabulary and even to note down words that they didn’t understand, so we can discuss them in class.
• Each week children are set a reading question and must produce a written response.
This encourages them to think more deeply about their reading and they should write their response in their Learning Logs.
Children who have read at least 4 times during the week AND answered their reading question, will be awarded a reading certificate and have their photo posted on Class Dojo School Story.
• Children will be set a list of between 10 and 12 words to learn each week. These will be tested in class a week after the spellings have been set (on a Tuesday).
The words for our spelling tests are usually taken from the Year 3 and 4 Statutory Spelling List, which can be accessed by the button below.
Children who score full marks in their spelling test will be awarded green bubbles.
Every term we will test the children’s knowledge of the entire Year 3 and 4 Statutory Spelling List in order to check the children’s progress. By the end of Year 4, children should be able to spell at least 85% of these words.
• Children will be set a different times table to learn each week and these will be tested on Mondays.
The children will be asked to practise their times tables in school and at home. Children who score full marks in their times tables test will be awarded green bubbles.
Tables are also monitored three times a week using Times Tables Rockstars sheets. These sheets test student’s mental multiplication and division facts. Each sheet has 60 questions and there is a set time limit of 3 minutes to complete each sheet.
It is VITAL that the children know the times tables and their related division facts, up to 12 x 12, by the end of Year 4.
In the event of that a child is ill, or required to self-isolate this academic year, we are happy to provide learning materials and work for your child to complete at home. This work will either be sent through ClassDojo, or available for you to access through the Showbie app.
In the event that our entire class is asked to self-isolate this academic year, we will be sending the children home with their iPads and running regular classes through Showbie’s video conferencing feature or Zoom. We will also send home paper, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners and any other learning materials that you may need.
