Moving on from phonics, children begin to look at spelling patterns and rules. Spelling lessons are taught discretely to practise these concepts at least twice a week.
As well as learning in spelling sessions, children are also expected to learn a list of spellings from the appropriate year group list for a weekly test. These words are taken from the National Curriculum statutory word lists and children should be able to spell them by the end of the appropriate year group in order to meet the expected standard for writing.
