Learning Sequences
Progression in the National Curriculum

At Bransty Primary all children are given the opportunity to undertake a balanced programme of 2D and 3D art activities which gives the children access to the traditions and language of art.

Each of the 3 programmes of study for each key stage are visited throughout each unit (block) following the CUSP curriculum model which builds on knowledge, skills and techniques and develops vocabulary and subject specific knowledge.

The CUSP Art curriculum is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D and collage. Vertical progression in each discipline has been deliberately woven into the fabric of the curriculum so that pupils can revisit key disciplines throughout their Primary journey at increasing degrees of challenge and complexity.

Art & Design at Bransty

“Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.”
• Quentin Blake, Children’s Laureate
Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. At Bransty, children explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures.
We want Art to allow the children to develop their imagination and creativity; to make connections through their inventive minds; and give them the skills to record their imagination and ideas. We also want to nurture children’s confidence in creating art, so art lessons can be a genuine place for self-exploration and freedom of expression.
In the EYFS, children explore, use and refine a variety of artistic effects to express their feelings and ideas. Different opportunities are available to the children daily. Children can work on their own ideas and select their own resources. They are encouraged to think about what they are making and use tools in a safe way. The children then build on these skills as they progress through the school. Children begin using sketchbooks in Year 1, which they keep as they move up through the school. These are invaluable for children to see the progress they make as artists and designers.
In Years 1 – 6, we use the CUSP materials as a basis for our Learning Sequences. Learning is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D and collage. Throughout their primary journey, pupils re-visit these at increasing
degrees of challenge and complexity.

Throughout the year we love to invite visitors into our school, venture on trips and use different stimuli to enhance out art skills. Here are some of the art pieces we have created in school:

If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please contact Mrs Walker or Ms O’Neill in the school office to arrange a meeting. Staff are available before and after school to discuss any issues or concerns.
