Applying for a Reception place for September 2023

You must apply for a primary school place a year before your child can start school.

Applications open in September and close on 15 January. Your child will be 3 or have just turned 4 when you apply.

You’ll need to apply then even if you want your child to start part-way through the year.

If your child will be 4 before the 31st August 2023 then you will be able to apply for a Reception place for September 2023.

Cumbria County Council (the Local Authority) is responsible for admissions to the Reception Class in Bransty Primary School. If you would like to apply for a Reception place please click here.

Councils will send offers of school places for primary schools on 16 April.  If  this date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, offers are sent the next working day.

You must accept the offer by the deadline given in the offer letter. Otherwise it may be withdrawn and the place given to someone else.

The local council must provide a place at another school, if your child is not offered a place at any of the schools you’ve applied for. This is usually your nearest school with places still available.

Transfer to secondary school – September 2023

If your child is currently in year 6 at junior/primary school, they will be due to transfer to secondary school in September 2023.

You must apply to Cumbria County Council for a secondary school place, under the Local Authority’s Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme. Please click here.

Please note – the online application process closes on 31st October 2022. Applications received after 31 October 2022 will be treated as late applications.

It is essential that you made your application before the closing date. If you did not, this could severely reduce the chances of you securing a place at one of your preferred schools.

If your child is in Year 6 at a primary or junior school in Cumbria you should have received a letter and a leaflet, via the school, which gives you some basic information about how to apply, and also a Unique Identifier (UID) code. This is a code which identifies your child’s application and using it will make it easier to complete your online application.

If you have not received a letter you can still apply online but you will need to enter all of your information manually.

Councils will send offers of school places for primary schools on 1 March.  If  this date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, offers are sent the next working day.
